Building D at GRAVITY 2.0

HWKN Architecture

Short description

The idea for HWKN’s future-forward project, Building D at GRAVITY 2.0, emerged in response to the pressing issues of high housing costs and limited inventory that plague urban living across America. HWKN sought to introduce co-living solutions, minimizing the personal space, while maximizing the communal experience, without compromising on quality. The concept turned into reality with the recent opening of Building D, which offers 101 apartments designed to facilitate shared living. Each apartment features individual bedrooms and bathrooms, complemented by communal dining and living areas, promoting a sense of community among residents.

Building D’s exterior is characterized by an efficient box with distinct architectural elements, such as the carved steps at the southwest corner, giving the building a distinct identity while integrating functionality with the adjacent Solazzo building. Inside, the building boasts group dining areas, well-equipped kitchens, two lounges, a gym, a meditation room, and a convenient ‘grab & go’ section. The exterior includes a courtyard, a pool, barbecues, and community gardens, fostering a vibrant and interactive environment. Situated between the West Broad Street neighborhood and East Franklinton’s Arts and Innovation district, Building D contributes to an area known for its unique design history, including the transformation of factories into artists' lofts and the construction of affordable single-family homes.

Gravity represents a groundbreaking departure from traditional apartment living, blending private and communal areas to cater to the evolving preferences of the next generation. Building D challenges long-held perceptions of urban dwelling - especially in the middle of America, setting a new standard for contemporary living. One of the most remarkable aspects of Building D is its commitment to affordability without sacrificing quality or amenities. This project embodies a vision for the future of urban living, characterized by innovation, inclusivity, and sustainability.
