Short description
The residence known as House Q, located in Abu Dhabi, UAE, reinterprets the traditional architecture of the region to suit modern life and culture. One of the key objectives of the project was to rethink the traditional courtyard typology. The house consists of a series of interconnected blocks arranged around a central courtyard, each containing different functions such as the family and service areas, formal living and dining spaces, and a semi-private gym, office, and guest room. These three main blocks are connected via linear axes that circumnavigate the central courtyard, creating a consistent inward-facing behaviour as one moves between the different spaces.
While the blocks are organized around the central courtyard, they also extend outward, opening up views to the pool and garden areas. This approach establishes a duality between the introverted, traditional courtyard layout and the more open, seamless plan of a modern typology. This balance allows for a variety of views and maximizes natural light throughout the house.
The use of curved forms is another reinterpretation of the rich architectural heritage of the region, with classic elements like arches, colonnades, and columns incorporated in a more personalized, modern manner. The material palette also reflects this fusion of old and new, juxtaposing raw, earthy limestone with crisp white paint, all set against the dry, natural landscape.
House Q represents a synthesis of regional architectural traditions and contemporary design. The design strikes a balance, resulting in a residence that feels both respectful of the past and firmly grounded in the present. This approach allows the home to retain a strong sense of its local context, while also providing a fresh, innovative interpretation of traditional forms and architectural types.
