Idilia

ARQUID S.L.P

Short description

Idilia Foods is a chocolate factory located in the Parets del Vallès neighbourhood of Barcelona. The project successfully facilitated production expansion by adding an extension to the building, transforming both the visual and experiential landscape of its facility. Precast concrete panels were incorporated to seamlessly match the façade and integrate with the existing structures. The extruded detail framing the façade symbolizes the connection between the factory and the cocoa fields where the raw product is sourced. Light and colour were studied to create varied ambiences. Inspired by colour theory, routes were designed to guide users around, resulting in efficient design and an enhanced user experience.

The new entrance, connecting the old and new buildings, highlights both employee and visitor routes, helping to maintain the structural flow of the industrial process while allowing awareness of all production processes without needing to step outside. This immersive experience is welcoming to the public. While the building is primarily a workplace, it also attracts multiple visitors, including children, who enjoy the chocolate factory experience. Inside, colours highlight different parts of the structure based on their function and production stage, guiding navigation and making exploration adventurous.

The interior's luminosity is emphasized by the stark contrast between the dark open ceilings and the white materials that reflect natural light through large polycarbonate cladding, establishing a dynamic office ambience that complements the building's overall charm. Another passive design strategy employed is the use of polycarbonate, which allows greater light penetration, reducing the need for non-renewable energy for routine daytime use.

Idilia's project systems and materials exemplify the emerging eco-friendly construction movement. Concrete was chosen for its durability and versatility, meeting the client and brief criteria. The sustainable approach through this choice of material is to minimize long-term impacts, as its longevity reduces the energy required for maintenance. Elements are produced in a controlled environment, then transported and assembled on-site, enhancing product quality and reduce waste during manufacturing.
