Nanhua Village Center School

Shenzhen Tianhua Architecture Design Co.,Ltd. , AND STUDIO

Short description

The project site is located at the junction of Binhe Avenue and Aihua South Road, with a "gap" to the southeast in the high-density urban space. From the site, the Shenzhen River is in view, beyond which are mulberry fields and fish ponds, and distant mountain ranges. The landscapes between Shenzhen and Hong Kong have witnessed the evolution of human activity on this land through the ages, transcending written history with their silent presence. To the north, the site is shaded by trees, and to the east lies an important urban waterfront landscape. The campus adopts a U-shaped layout oriented towards the southeast to maximize views, creating a natural courtyard surrounded by a "green valley" of buildings with layered terraces. An elevated southeast playground serves as an aerial viewing platform, integrating a sports and performance center that enhances the urban public interface with its artistic and sports. Following the principles of "dynamic and static zoning, primary and junior high separation, and multi-core sharing," the campus is divided into six major centers. The primary and junior high teaching centers are strategically located on opposite ends, while shared public teaching centers, including a STEAM center and an Arts and Sports Center, are situated on the east and west sides. The library, as the knowledge hub, is conveniently located near the main and secondary entrances, with the administrative and living centers stacked vertically nearby. Vehicle entrances are strategically placed on the east and west sides to alleviate urban traffic. Pedestrian entrances on the southeast and northwest sides are connected by an aerial corridor, a school dismissal passage, and a parent waiting area, forming a multi-path transportation system that facilitates easy movement. The first and second floors house vibrant public teaching spaces. The central library overlooks a courtyard and the surrounding landscape, while the north side features an overhead square for club activities. The Arts and Sports Center, with its core wind and rain playground, includes music and dance rooms, a multi-functional hall, and a swimming pool, fostering a rich cultural atmosphere along the urban waterfront. The landscape design creates a shared, resilient oasis that softens the campus interface with green islands and provides ample outdoor spaces for students to engage with nature. Indigenous trees and ground cover contribute to a microclimate that enhances the school's ecological resilience and offers a cool, shaded environment. Adapting to Shenzhen's humid climate, passive strategies are employed in the campus design. Buildings are oriented north-south, with spaces opening to the southeast for optimal ventilation. Courtyards act as green cores, facilitating the circulation of wind, light, and greenery. Prefabricated assembly, lightweight self-insulating materials, and green facades minimize direct sunlight, improving thermal comfort and reducing construction pollution, creating a low-carbon, eco-friendly campus.
