Quebec City’s Place de l’Hôtel-de-Ville
Lemay

Short description
In keeping with the vision for the renewal of the City Hall Grounds, the redevelopment of the City Hall square subtly meshes contemporary technical elements with a prominent historic environment to propose a multi-purpose, functional and sustainable place that is both distinctive and subordinate.
Between the Basilica-Cathedral and the City Hall forecourt, boundaries fade away making way for the deployment of a complete public space with a unified framework, skilfully maintaining vehicular traffic lanes and overall accessibility.
The square is redefined from facade to facade, elegantly marking this significant site that bears witness to a historical link between the civic power and the clergy. This pedestrian link is reinforced within the square through visual and functional elements along the axis that connects the two entrances.
Starting with the idea of a central, structuring stage, the new design encourages the public to take greater ownership of the space through carefully chosen features. Most notable is a granite mosaic that defines new boundaries around the plaza and ensures the safe cohabitation of pedestrians and motorists. Low walls and natural stone steps invite passersby to relax and socialize, as do oversized wooden benches arranged to encourage gathering.
Mature elm trees have been preserved throughout the site, their roots protected by metal grills. At the heart of the square, the Taschereau monument honours the memory of Canada's first cardinal. Illuminated by masts fitted with spotlights and recessed luminaires that complement the lamp posts typical of Old Quebec, the distinctive lighting has been carefully designed to ensure the comfort of users while contributing to showcasing the heritage buildings and surrounding amenities.
Destined to attract even more visitors than before, the Place de l’Hotel de Ville is not just a place of renewal, but also of rediscovery and reconnection, designed for the enjoyment of all.
