Short description

Inspired by the stunning waterfront views of the property, the intention of this full-scope renovation on an older, dated home was twofold: to open up the interior so that there was a much greater sense of space, volume and connectedness between rooms; and secondly to create better connections between the interior and exterior with more livable outdoor spaces for this busy family to retreat to with friends and family.

The home was stripped back to the studs. A vaulted roofline created a much more open and airy feeling on the upper level. A main wall was taken down between the kitchen and living room as well as the entry and living room, so that as soon as you walk in the front door you are struck by a continuous view of the ocean beyond through new, large-scale sliding doors and windows. For the homeowners who love to entertain, this connection between living, dining, kitchen and outdoor spaces was critical. The views are further accentuated by the use of slender black casings on the openings, which serve to draw attention to and frame the vistas. The dining area was placed right up at the view; the custom sofa banquette surrounded by windows on three sides creates a cozy place to dine inside on a cooler day or curl up with a good book, puzzle or boardgame. The kitchen was reoriented so that the view could be appreciated while prepping at the island, and a large walk-in pantry adds great functionality to this chef’s kitchen. In the primary suite, two smaller bedrooms were combined to create one larger more functional bedroom, walk-in closet and ensuite. The freestanding tub was placed in the bedroom, with views to the water, emphasizing the experience of a retreat from the city. Behind the bed, a fresh take on panelling lends a layered, beachy feel. Downstairs, a games room takes center stage with cozy guest bedrooms off to the sides.

Inspired by a contemporary, coastal Australian aesthetic, the interior is a space that is fresh yet tactile and layered, with materials selected to emphasise a casual, beachy environment. Handmade tiles add depth and texture, while a green marble fireplace hearth creates strong visual drama. The metals throughout the home were picked in brushed or raw finishes with the intention that they feel warm and patinaed. The proud frame detailing on the wood millwork was applied as a nod to solid built cottage cabinetry. The frame also acts as an integrated pull, allowing the design of the millwork to feel more informal. The ceiling in the living room was reclad in tongue and groove paneling and whitewashed. The updated freestanding wood-burning fireplace unit was selected to emulate the original, while maintaining a more cozy, quaint atmosphere. With consideration for minimizing obstructions of the view, sheer linen window treatments and a lightweight pendant were selected for the dining area. The homeowners’ refined taste, along with one-of-a-kind accessories collected over time, provided an abundance of layers.

The exterior of the home was also refinished with new cedar shakes in a warm weathered grey stain to evoke the passage of time as well as to recede into the neighbouring trees. Over the patio the roof overhang was extended to provide respite from the westerly sun. The result is a place where the family can retreat and enjoy each other’s company while being inspired by the views and surrounded by a uniquely personal interior.
