The core members of T.E.N are distinguished by their exceptional educational and professional backgrounds. Graduates of top-tier institutions such as Harvard University, the University of Cambridge, ETH Zurich, and Tongji University, the team brings a wealth of knowledge and expertise to the studio. Their professional experience spans globally renowned design firms, including UNStudio, KPF, NBBJ, and SASAKI, where they have contributed to a diverse array of design projects. This experience has equipped T.E.N's team with a robust foundation in urban planning, architectural design, landscape architecture, and interior design.
In addition to their design prowess, T.E.N's team members have accumulated extensive experience in project development and management. Notable institutions such as JLL (Jones Lang LaSalle) and the University of Cambridge Real Estate Machine Learning Laboratory have benefited from their expertise. These roles have enriched T.E.N's approach, enabling the studio to integrate design with practical, real-world considerations, ensuring that their projects are not only visionary but also feasible and sustainable.
Over the past two years, T.E.N has dedicated itself to exploring new typologies of spaces that bridge the gap between the real and the virtual. The studio's projects span various scales and domains, with a particular focus on rural revitalization, urban renewal, and public spaces. Through these endeavors, T.E.N aims to redefine how design interacts with and enhances everyday life. Their work is guided by the principles of Technology, Economy, and Nature, which form the foundational pillars of their design philosophy.
T.E.N is committed to leveraging cutting-edge technology to push the boundaries of traditional design. By incorporating advanced digital tools and methodologies, the studio is able to create innovative solutions that address contemporary challenges. Whether through the use of parametric design, virtual reality, or artificial intelligence, T.E.N continuously seeks to integrate technological advancements into their projects, enhancing both the design process and the final outcomes.
Economic considerations are integral to T.E.N's approach to design. The studio understands that successful projects must not only be aesthetically pleasing but also economically viable. T.E.N employs rigorous analysis and strategic planning to ensure that their designs are cost-effective and sustainable. This involves careful consideration of materials, construction methods, and long-term maintenance, ensuring that each project delivers value over time.
Nature plays a central role in T.E.N's design ethos. The studio strives to create spaces that harmonize with the natural environment, promoting sustainability and well-being. By integrating green spaces, sustainable materials, and eco-friendly practices, T.E.N's projects foster a connection between people and nature. This commitment to environmental stewardship is evident in their efforts to enhance biodiversity, reduce carbon footprints, and create resilient landscapes.
One of T.E.N's standout projects, Urban Irrigation, exemplifies their innovative approach to urban renewal. This project is a multifaceted public space initiative that combines urban, architectural, landscape, and installation design elements. Traditionally, "irrigation" refers to the artificial process of applying controlled amounts of water to land to assist in crop production. In T.E.N's proposal, "irrigation" is reimagined to facilitate the production of activities and support human, plant, and water life in an urban context.
Located at a street corner on Yuhua West Road, the water tower in Tangshan has been a symbolic legacy of the city's modern industrial period. Historically, it served as a vital water resource infrastructure for the surrounding residents. However, with the advancements in the urban water supply system, the once essential water tower has been abandoned, leading to various concerns. Its current dilapidated state detracts from the street's aesthetics, poses safety hazards, and leaves a 30 square meter corner space inactive due to lack of planning and management.
As an epitome of Tangshan's urban development, the water tower holds generational memories of growth and transformation. Therefore, its renewal and renovation are imbued with a spirit that respects the history of the modern industrial period while envisioning a future that blends innovation with nostalgia. The proposal envisions a future sustainable urban public space that facilitates contemporary life while preserving industrial relics.
Although Urban Irrigation has not been realized, it has garnered significant international recognition and awards. The project received the Gold winner of the Urban & Design & Architecture Design Awards 2023, the Gold Award of the Asian Digital Art Design Competition 2022, the Finalist Award of the 2022 London International Creative Competition, and the Winner of the BLT Built Design Awards 2022. These accolades underscore T.E.N's commitment to pushing the boundaries of design and creating spaces that resonate with both historical significance and future potential.
In conclusion, T.E.N is a visionary design studio that combines technical expertise, economic insight, and a deep respect for nature to create innovative and impactful spaces. Their multidisciplinary approach and commitment to excellence have positioned them as leaders in the field of architecture and urban design. As T.E.N continues to grow and evolve, they remain dedicated to redefining the role of design in shaping the future of our built environment.
