Chongqing OCT Sports Park

Short description

The site’s maximum vertical height difference reached 113m, and its lowest part was a river valley. The site had a complex terrain, many cliffs, and vast exposed side slope areas, which brought great difficulty to the design. Meanwhile, the extensive cutting and filling in previous development destroyed the natural terrain and vegetation. The new terrain faced geographical instability, landslides, land subsidence, and other risks. The lake region was polluted by sludges and lost its ornamental value.
With a design tailored to local conditions, the rare water landscapes in the city were protected and beautified, providing citizens with a causal, natural riverside space. We designed complicated and organized draining based on the height difference and combined it with the original stream on the mountain, creating a landscape drainage channel with high ornamental value. Meanwhile, a water gathering pool was added to collect the water from the mountain and rainwater. Then, such water flew into the terraced fields created according to the terrain. Eventually, the rainwater passed various filtering devices and flew into the lake region. We also set up a series of rainwater gardens around the lake to protect water resources on the site.
Meanwhile, we created a flat, open lawn with a nice view in the park to leave adequate space for citizens to camp. A 1.2km mountain bike lane was laid through the park, connecting the park with the city and linking all scenic nodes we created. Then, different plants, including willows, cherry trees, and ginkgo trees, were lined in sections to create a bike lane view and enrich the cycling experience. At the initial stage of our design, we reviewed the bike lane’s slope gradient through remote sensing mapping and field investigation to ensure it could be used comfortably. Meanwhile, the review findings showed that plenty of rainwater undercurrents were stored in the mountain. Thus, we added a drainage ditch and prefabricated drain pipe every 15 meters on all sides that backed the mountain to meet the drainage requirement. Besides, we set up a lakeside plank road around the lake and left a space for citizens to stand at the location with the best line of sight.
On the other side of the lake region was a pristine wetland region with luxuriant natural vegetation and a good ecological environment. Following the principle of light intervention, we reserved this wetland region and provided a glass plank road for viewing and scientific popularization. Standing here, citizens can experience the scene where layers of trees create a bright green hue, and lonely ducks fly together against the rosy evening glow.
