HGEsch Photography

Short description

HGEsch’s work is produced high up in the air. Standing on top of a skyscraper, flying a drone higher than a low-level aircraft – these are some of the joys of an architectural photographer’s perception. Of course, there are the clients’ wishes; and among these clients you will find the most accomplished architectural studios of the world. But, as it is practice in all architectural photography since its beginnings in the 19th century, there is always the one photograph which counts more than the commissioned ones, the photographer’s dream of a vision: Bringing together the culture of skateboarding with sustainability, matching Manhattans modern architecture with it’s historic skyline, receiving insights into some of the most anticipated buildings of Riyadh. And there are wide overviews, mapping whole cities ancient and modern. Looking from above in the outside means a consideration of the ceiling on the inside – HGEsch pays an enormous attention to breaking the norm with unseen perspectives. Considering the height of large halls, he plays with the position of the horizon, just the same way the Dutch painters of the Golden age did: Looking at their paintings as at HGEsch’s photographs, you either feel small or huge but nothing in between. Raising interest in more dramatic settings, those painters used the abstraction of extracting colours into the black and white of the grisaille – exactly the same way HGEsch does with digital photography today. Architectural photography is the projection of a three-dimensional space onto a two-dimensional surface, either screened or printed. Besides the choice of subject and the quality of composition, this projection is the element of mastery – especially in the work of HGEsch.
