REFINED INDUSTRIAL HOME

The clients for this midtown Toronto home wanted to build their home with elements typically found in a commercial building. They also wanted their home to be welcoming, warm and livable for their family and guests.

We welcomed the idea of exposing the structural elements in the home to expose their raw beauty and authenticity. Each room became a unique and interesting exploration of what is possible when we expose structure rather than covering it up. We painted all of the structure a soft white colour, and added refined elements such as custom wood wall panels with subtle reveals, custom wood ceilings, custom lighting configurations, and custom millwork to create warmth, refinement and balance.

We further enhanced the livability of the space by filling it with natural textures such as wood, linen, white brick, wool rugs, natural accessories, and wallhangings. The overall palette was kept light and neutral to calm the senses, and provide a serene backdrop for the owners’ existing art collection.

An important part of making the space livable and welcoming was enhancing the indoor-outdoor connection and bringing nature indoors. We did this by creating unobstructed views to the outdoors with automated windowcoverings that disappear, using elements like a double sided fireplace that service both the spa and the family room, and creating views from one room to the next that go through outdoor space such as from the kitchen to family room. Using plants and greenery extensively throughout the space was important to bring life, nature and balance to every room.

Luxury elements such as a car lift, a man cave with view to a 6 car underground parking garage, an elaborate custom wine cellar, and a dedicated home theatre, all take this home to the next level while continuing to explore the theme of balancing industrial, refined and natural elements.

The juxtaposition of raw structural elements with refined detailing and the addition of natural elements serves to highlight and enhance all, creating an authentic space that is unique, inviting, relaxing and beautiful.
