Guide
ArchitectureCompetitions.
International awards and competitions remain one of the most effective ways for architects and designers to gain recognition, reach new clients and benchmark their work against a global field. This guide explains the landscape — and how to choose the right programme for your practice.
01 — Why enter
Recognition thattravels.
An international award signals quality to clients, press and collaborators far beyond your home market. For smaller studios, a single recognised project can change the trajectory of the practice.
Competitions also impose a useful discipline: they force you to document, photograph and articulate a project clearly — assets that serve your portfolio, your website and your next competition entry alike.

03 — How juries decide
What jurieslook for.
Design quality
Juries look for a clear idea executed with rigour — spatial, formal and material coherence rather than novelty for its own sake.
Context and purpose
How the project responds to its site, programme and users. Strong entries explain the problem before showing the solution.
Documentation
Photography, drawings and concise text decide most entries. Invest in presentation: juries review hundreds of submissions under time pressure.
Eligibility and timing
Check completion windows, category definitions and entry fees before committing. Many programmes offer early-bird pricing months ahead of the deadline.
