Overview

A Living Solution — A Contemporary Dwelling for Two Families.

The “Bamboo House” is a traditional dwelling type in Guangzhou, China, dating back to the 19th century as a response to population growth and limited urban land. Typically long (7–28 meters) and narrow (4–5 meters), these houses organize rooms and courtyards in a linear sequence resembling the nodes of a bamboo stalk. Small, tall atriums and narrow alleys promote natural ventilation and heat dissipation, making the typology well adapted to Guangzhou’s hot and humid climate. Over time, however, increasing density has transformed many bamboo houses into overcrowded, low-rent housing with limited access to daylight.

The redesign reinterprets this traditional typology as a contemporary home for two families on a constrained urban site, preserving its climatic advantages while addressing overcrowding, insufficient daylight, and contemporary living needs.

The site measures approximately 6 by 26 meters. A narrow longitudinal void along the west side brings additional light and air deep into the building. Inside, tall courtyards punctuate a linear sequence of domestic spaces, connected by an east-side corridor that retains the spatial logic of the traditional Bamboo House.

Rather than occupying conventional separate floors, the two households interlock across the upper and lower portions of the building, with independent entrances and circulation systems; the garage is the only shared space. Each home contains complete living facilities. The lower home benefits from direct courtyard access and more generous living areas, while the upper home gains terraces, greater privacy, and increased daylight.

Two central courtyards are environmentally shared by both households. Their tall proportions generate a stack effect, drawing warm air upward and helping cool the interiors naturally. The corridor and west-side void further reinterpret the traditional “cold alley” as longitudinal air channels connecting the front and rear of the house. Together, courtyards, alleys, voids, and skylights form a passive system that brings daylight and continuous airflow into the deep plan, translating the climatic intelligence of the historic Bamboo House into a contemporary model for dense urban living.
