Can Farrés Hotel: Harmonizing Landscape and History in Montserrat

Nestled in the heart of the Sierra de Montserrat Natural Park, just a few kilometers from Barcelona, the Can Farrés Hotel represents the transformation of a historic 15th-century farmhouse into a serene rural retreat. This thoughtful rehabilitation showcases an unparalleled integration of architectural heritage with the surrounding landscape, highlighting centuries of natural and cultural evolution.

Landscape Intervention Rooted in Empathy The design of the outdoor spaces emphasizes a deep connection with the existing landscape and the natural forces that have shaped it. By respecting the agricultural traditions of the Montserrat region, the intervention incorporates conglomerate stone, emblematic of the park’s geology, alongside ceramic materials and metal trellises that have been integral to the area’s agricultural identity for generations.

Around the farmhouse, a diverse arrangement of seating areas invites guests to experience the seamless blend of history and nature. These spaces foster tranquility while celebrating the enduring link between landscape and local tradition.

Reconnecting Architecture and Landscape The proposal is driven by a desire to reconnect the Can Farrés Hotel with its environment, embracing its geological foundations, spiritual significance, and agricultural character. This approach restores the essential bond between architecture and the landscape—a hallmark of the construction practices that have defined this region throughout its history.

In every aspect, the intervention honors the Sierra de Montserrat Natural Park's unique identity, creating an authentic and respectful dialogue between built structures and nature. The result is a timeless experience that resonates with guests, offering a harmonious refuge in a location rich with heritage and natural beauty.
