Overview

The site originally housed a century-old shipyard, evolved from the Qing Dynasty Guangzhou Naval Dockyard. The design team undertook a protective renewal and reconfiguration of the historic remains, transforming them into a riverside aesthetic art space that embodies the city's spirit. Suspended at the entrance, the "Vessel of Departure" shipbone installation uses an expansive linear form that naturally echoes the building's geometric logic. No solid partition walls are used throughout the space. Functional zones are defined solely by changes in flooring, ceiling variations, and furniture layout, preserving maximum openness and flexibility for public events of different scales. From hard finishes to furnishings, every core form responds to the fluidity of water. The central bar takes the shape of layered ripples. The "Pearl River Rhythm" dynamic pendulum installation generates real-time water ripple patterns on an LED floor, working in unison with the smooth curves of the furniture and locally placed water-ripple carpets. Visitors wander naturally through the space, completing an experience that softens the original rigor of industrial architecture, making it more inviting. The "Thousand Weaves of the Pearl River" acrylic sculpture evokes the interwoven forms of fishing nets, carrying the region's Lingnan fishing culture. The "City of Pearl Chains" art model uses high-precision 3D printing to recreate the urban landscape along the Pearl River, a reversal metaphor of the site's transformation from natural waterfront to cultural metropolis. The polished dark grey stone flooring echoes the heavy texture of the original shipyard concrete. Light beige and brown tones neutralize the coldness of industrial materials, while black metal continues the steel framework of the shipyard. The color palette is strictly controlled to off-white, dark grey, and warm brown, with only small accents of orange floral arrangements. This restrained approach avoids visual clutter, allowing the space to focus on structure, light, shadow, and artistic expression, exuding a quiet, refined sophistication.
