Overview

A Fable of Daily Life in the Canal Capital: Cultivating Civic Life Through A Temporal Void of Green

In Huai'an, a historical city shaped and sustained by the pulse of the Grand Canal, the commercial core of Qingjiangpu has never lacked clamor or congregation. Huai'an MixC Commercial Center emerged within this dense nexus as a monumental urban complex. In a defiant departure from the conventional paradigm that prioritizes commercial presence and signification, the project is driven by the philosophy of "investing in the public realm to cultivate public life". The design adopts a park-centric commercial strategy, deliberately transforming outdoor space into a highly adaptive park with an expansive event lawn —ultimately creating an inclusive urban identity and a resilient, co-generative relationship with the city and its local citizens.

Within this park, a 2,500-square-meter central event lawn inosculates seamlessly with commercial frontages and spill-out areas, allowing the ground plane to effortlessly alternate between spontaneous daily campouts and seasonal markets. Here, citizens are invited and encouraged to wander, linger, and pause at will. Through this "altruistic" spatial configuration, the design subverts the monumental oppression typically imposed by commercial megastructures. The relaxed urban wilderness recedes into a poetic background for contemporary local lifestyles, catalyzing organic public gathering and allowing public life to emerge naturally from the matrix of casual leisure.

At entry plaza, color-gradated paving systems mimic the progressive ebb and flow of a rising tide, establishing a sense of visual orientation and arrival. The sunken courtyard functions as a hidden canyon. Vertical green walls and cascading water terraces construct an ecological buffer, transforming a chaotic transit node into a serene, bio-sheltered valley. A long band of canal-like water feature is designed strategically to buffer the street edges. Water streams glide elegantly across the heavily textured stonework.
