Jingdezhen House-in-House Plugins by People's Architecture Office

Overview

The Jingdezhen House-in-House Plugins are a series of prefabricated structures used to upgrade a number of historic ceramic workshops. Jingdezhen is known as China’s Porcelain Capital. It has been producing ceramics for at least 1,000 years, dating back to the Han Dynasty. The Jingdezhen Plugins are adjacent to the imperial kilns that produced porcelains for the imperial family.

People’s Architecture Office utilized their proprietary Plugin House system to transform vacant and dilapidated spaces into living and working studios for young artists. The irregular shape and structure of the pre-existing building pose a challenge to any renovation. However the Plugin system easily adapts to fit these variations. The original structures are left untouched with many areas exposed to the outdoors. The Plugins sit within these structures. They are only spaces that are insulated and provide heating and cooling. These ceramics workshops remain well preserved but also have a renewed life through the use of the Plugin system.
