Overview

Located at Vienna’s former Nordbahnhof railway station, this residential complex serves as a gateway to the new urban development site “Freie Mitte – Vielseitiger Rand”. The project integrates StudioVlayStreeruwitz’s urban planning concept through its cascading urban terraces, while blending building and landscape as well as residential and commercial areas to create a vibrant and sustainable environment for the neighborhood.

Three towers – one 30m and two 35m high - rise from a planted base that spirals up to the fifth floor like a cascading green ribbon. The architectural composition features horizontal layering with a plinth, a setback separating the levels and three individual building blocks, resulting in clearly defined, proportional volumes. The façades are characterized by light loggias and balconies with generous planters to encourage vertical greenery.

The ascending landscape is activated through various user groups and communal spaces: Shared apartments, offices and maisonettes are oriented towards the open space, complemented by communal amenities including a kitchen, laundry facility, exercise room, urban gardening areas and a children's playground. These spaces are arranged across different public levels, supporting social interaction and community engagement.

At street level, transparent entrances and retail spaces establish a strong urban presence. A soup bar, a non-profit repair café, and a vocational facility with an integrated workshop garden enrich the pathway leading to the "Freie Mitte." The complex's botanical design is extensive: Minimally sealed ground floor surfaces, abundant façade greenery with integrated plant containers, large soil boxes on the roof terrace for perennials, beds and trees, plant mounds and a flower meadow on the rooftop, ensure a pleasant urban climate, underlining the project’s commitment to environmental integration.
