Overview
Designed for a couple who had called this apartment home for over a decade, this renovation was conceived as an act of listening and reading a life already lived in the space and giving it a new, more fluid grammar. SUITE reimagined the entire 300-square-meter plan, dissolving the rigid partitions of a conventional layout and folding underused rooms back into the whole, so that every square meter earns its place.
The result is a single, continuous living area that flows into the kitchen and laundry without losing definition, punctuated zones rather than closed rooms. A single bedroom, generous enough to hold two walk-in closets and two bathrooms, replaces what had once been a multiplication of underused spaces.
Finishes were deliberately restrained: a neutral, tactile palette built for daily life, chosen to recede rather than compete. This quietness is a frame, precise enough to let a lifetime of collecting take the lead. Iconic pieces, from the De Sede DS-600 sofa to a marquetry desk by Jorge Zalszupin inherited from the resident's father, sit alongside contemporary work by Lucas Recchia and SUITE's own Tektônica stools, in dialogue.
That same restraint also serves to accommodate an art collection built across generations, from a 17th-century old master to contemporary works by Beatriz Milhazes, Ernesto Neto and Leonor Antunes. Wall placement, lighting and room proportions were defined in part by the collection itself. A mobile by Alexander Calder informed ceiling height and circulation in the living area, and a portrait of the resident's mother by Manabu Mabe anchors the entrance sequence. Canvases by Alfredo Volpi, Ianelli and Milton Da Costa sit along direct sightlines from the main living space. Rather than being added after the fact, the collection functioned as part of the design brief, shaping the layout alongside the residents' daily needs.
This logic defines the project's central concept: instead of applying a predefined stylistic language, SUITE built the apartment around the specific history of its residents. Consolidating underused rooms into one fluid living area, retaining inherited pieces, and positioning both the art and design collections within the new plan were decisions drawn directly from how this couple lives and what they have gathered over a decade in the space. In this apartment, architecture functions as a portrait, a built record of that particular life history.
