Tai Kwun: Central Police Station Revitalization
AECOM · Hong Kong
Honorable Mention 2022

Overview
Tai Kwun transforms the historic Central Police Station into a place of art and culture where imagination and community are instilled in the fabric of its preservation, contemporary architecture, and public spaces. Established in 1841 as the colony's main police station, magistracy, and prison, the site is one of Hong Kong's important remaining historic monuments. The decommissioning in 2006 was an opportunity to re-establish the Central Police Station as a new icon. The main spaces, the Parade Ground, and Prison Yard underwent a full metamorphosis – what used to be spaces of confinement in the past became public spaces for cultural exchange, gathering, and commercial programming. Tai Kwun is a modern art and cultural hub founded on the rich legacy of place – establishing a new heritage.
