Overview
Toro Toro Sushi & Poke, located in Mississauga, Toronto, redefines the conventional Japanese fast-paced restaurant, elevating the modern takeout concept. This innovative approach creates a new era of fast-casual dining, offering the neighborhood an unexpected hidden gem.
The 2,200 square-foot space is divided into two distinct zones, seamlessly connecting the main dining room and private dining rooms through full-height glazing and slat screens. The wooden screen, serving as a metaphorical curtain, symmetrically shapes the space, transforming it into a theatrical stage that highlights the central open kitchen.
The main dining room centers around an interactive experience with a stage-like open kitchen. Encircled by a 50-foot rectilinear counter, this core area creates a performance space for chefs, engaging visitors from all angles. The intricately detailed and meticulously laid-out counter ensures a seamless operational flow, allowing the menu to be expertly crafted and efficiently delivered to guests.
This central area energizes the entire space. The double-height vaulted ceiling, symmetrically layered with numerous slanted wood slat screens inspired by the Japanese 'Kiyomizudera' temple, defines the atrium's volume holistically, filling the room with a vibrant atmosphere.
The feature wall design behind the central counter seamlessly integrates back-of-house access, creating a visual focal point upon entry. Inspired by the layering, precise lines, knife-edge textures, and geometric intricacies of the Japanese sashimi slicing technique "hirazukuri," this design language blends artistry with functionality, enhancing the overall aesthetic.
The project redefines architectural perception and experience through bold color, innovative lighting engineering, and contemporary architectural language and detailing. It stands as a shining example of how interior design can adapt to modern challenges while fostering a progressive dialogue between design and architecture, demonstrating how to activate and enhance the space's volume. As a beacon of excellence and innovation in interior design, the Toro Toro Sushi & Poke restaurant project sets a high standard for future endeavors in Canada and beyond, encapsulating the essence of Japanese tradition and modern dining.
