Yokai Izakaya

Fourfold Studio

Short description

Step into the realm of design innovation at Yokai Izakaya in Vaughan, Canada – a mystical speakeasy that transcends conventional boundaries. Within its walls, an immersive journey awaits, celebrating Japanese urban architecture and culture through an intricate interplay of elements that redefine the very concept of an interior restaurant.

As the visionary creators behind this 1800 sq. ft. design, our mission was clear: to encapsulate the vibrant pulse of a supernatural cityscape within the confines of a singular space. This endeavor pays homage to Japanese urban design, where modernity harmoniously coexists with rectilinear geometries. Yokai Izakaya emerges as a testament to this unique interplay, an ode to the city's architectural essence.

Prepare to embark on a sensory exploration that extends beyond mere aesthetics. Stepping through the doors, you're greeted by a seamless transition that unfolds from a Karesansui garden-inspired vestibule into the main dining room. Here, the Shou Sugi Ban charred wood cladding stands as a striking tribute to traditional craftsmanship. Its captivating presence frames the entrance, hinting at the visual narrative that lies within.

The restaurant's design comes alive through an avant-garde ceiling feature that captures the spirit of an inverted cityscape. Imagine the interlocking dance of open copper frames and solid ceiling modules, adorned with inverted copper elements at various heights, enveloping guests in an otherworldly ambiance. The ceiling feature module subtly extends to the back wall of the sake bar, transforming into an alluring wine display while preserving a harmonious design language. The captivating mask wall takes center stage, drawing attention and seamlessly aligning with the brand's visual identity.

Journeying deeper, a corridor beckons, immersing guests in a playfully imaginative experience. The infinity mirror room stands as a testament to being "lost in the dark forest," guiding guests into four distinct washrooms, each a carefully curated universe of its own. Neon lights bridge the transition from the washrooms to the corridors, conjuring memories of the streets in Japan and subtly transforming the energy through shadows and colors.

Throughout the design, the restaurant retains an unmistakable aura, a fusion of dramatic allure and Japanese architectural finesse. It isn't just a collection of elements; it's an adventure that guests unfold with every step.
