Overview
Located in Alcácer do Sal, Portugal, the Alapega Agrotourism Hotel is a rehabilitation and landscape integration project set within a rural estate of approximately 4,500 m². Surrounded by the characteristic agricultural landscapes of the Alentejo region, the project seeks to transform the existing property into a contemporary agrotourism destination while preserving its rural identity and strengthening its relationship with the surrounding environment.
The primary objective of the intervention is to create a hospitality environment that enhances the quality of the existing buildings and outdoor spaces, providing comfortable accommodation within a landscape that celebrates nature, local heritage, and sustainable tourism. Rather than imposing a new architectural language, the proposal reinforces the site's existing character through careful integration of architecture, landscape, and ecological principles.
The design responds directly to the site's natural conditions, taking advantage of its topography, permeability, orientation, and surrounding vegetation to establish a coherent and resilient masterplan. Every intervention has been conceived to minimise environmental impact while improving the functionality and visual quality of the estate.
A flexible spatial strategy organises the property into interconnected indoor and outdoor experiences, encouraging guests to engage with the landscape throughout their stay. Existing buildings are rehabilitated to support the agrotourism programme, while new landscape elements enhance accessibility, comfort, and recreational opportunities without compromising the site's rural atmosphere.
One of the project's defining features is the integration of a swimming pool and leisure areas that are carefully embedded within the natural topography. Rather than becoming dominant architectural elements, these spaces are designed to complement the surrounding landscape, reinforcing the dialogue between built form and nature.
Sustainability is a fundamental component of the proposal. The landscape strategy incorporates climate adaptation measures that improve water management, preserve soil permeability, promote biodiversity, and increase natural shading, contributing to the long-term resilience of the estate. Material selection and planting strategies prioritise durability, low maintenance, and compatibility with the local ecosystem.
The project ultimately aims to establish a contemporary rural retreat that reflects the cultural and environmental values of the Alentejo. By balancing architectural rehabilitation, landscape design, and sustainable development, the Alapega Agrotourism Hotel offers an authentic hospitality experience where architecture becomes an extension of the landscape, creating meaningful connections between visitors, agriculture, and the unique natural setting of Alcácer do Sal.
