Montreal Irish Monument Memorial Site

Overview
For over 160 years, the Black Rock has stood at the foot of Victoria Bridge: a monumental stone recovered from the St. Lawrence riverbed during the bridge's construction, marking the resting place of nearly 6,000 Irish immigrants who perished from typhus during the Great Famine migration. Long isolated beside a busy arterial road, this significant site lacked the spatial framework to honour its weight. The project transforms its surroundings into a memorial park of national and international resonance, giving the monument the landscape it has always deserved.
The design is organized around the Black Rock as its symbolic heart. An agora frames it, creating a quiet, contemplative threshold where visitors pause and reflect. The surrounding landscape draws from the Irish countryside, with flowering meadows, low plantings, and natural stones composing a verdant tapestry that evokes the land these immigrants left behind.
A monumental corten steel veil, perforated with 6,000 Celtic crosses, traverses the site as both structure and narrative. Each perforation represents a life lost. On the ground, crosses embedded in the pavement link sky and earth. From this field, fourteen stelae emerge, recalling remains recently uncovered on the site. Silkscreened images trace the perilous ocean crossing of the Irish diaspora and the solidarity of Montrealers who came to their aid, guiding visitors through an immersive journey. The path culminates in a bow-shaped lookout that, like a ship's prow, opens onto sweeping views of the park, the river, and symbolically, Ireland across the Atlantic.
Integrated into the international Great Famine Way circuit, the park positions Montreal within a transnational memorial network. Visible from the REM light rail and Victoria Bridge, it transforms a history-laden site into living heritage: a place of welcome, gathering, and transmission where remembrance is not static, but alive.
