Swire Taikoo Huifang by AECOM Asia Company Limited

Overview

Situated on Guangzhou’s central urban axis in the bustling Tianhe District, Swire Huifang injects a fresh, youth-driven energy into the iconic Taikoo Hui ecosystem. Guangzhou is a metropolis defined by its cultural depth and leisurely pace of life—a city where historical heritage and forward-thinking luxury coexist seamlessly. Rather than allowing outdoor areas to exist as residual, passive space left behind by architecture, this landscape master plan draws direct inspiration from the ancient Chinese urban ward system: 坊 (fang).

Historically, the fang served as an enclosed neighborhood block that balanced spatial order with rich communal living. By reinterpreting its four structural pillars—the Gate, the Courtyard, the Alley, and the Square—the design converts traditional spatial hierarchy into active, lifestyle-driven public realms. It celebrates Guangzhou's celebrated slow lifestyle, its vibrant festive traditions, and its unique fusion of Eastern and Western influences, establishing a contemporary luxury destination rooted in deep cultural authenticity.

The Gate | 门

The Urban Threshold

Serving as the primary interface between the city and the retail ecosystem, the Gate bridges Guangzhou’s past with its modern, trendsetting edge. It establishes a distinct sense of arrival, managing the spatial transition from the fast-paced energy of Tianhe District into a curated, human-scaled haven. Through architectural framing, integrated seatwalls, and refined material details, the Gate establishes an inviting portal that reflects both high-end sophistication and warm accessibility.

The Courtyard | 院

Heritage Meets Modern Warmth

Conceived as the emotional core of the project, the Courtyard modernizes the traditional Xiguan lightwell (tianting) and historic Lingnan garden typologies. It functions as a lush, sheltered sanctuary where visitors can pause and recharge. By blending heritage-inspired materials with native Cantonese flora, ambient water elements, and ergonomic outdoor seating, this space offers an intimate setting for dining, conversation, and relaxed contemplation amid the urban luxury of Taikoo Hui.

The Alley | 巷

Layers of Life in Motion

Serving as the site's primary circulatory network, the Alley reimagines Guangzhou's historic street and lane systems (xiangli). Designed as a series of winding, pedestrian-first corridors, it transforms simple movement into an experiential journey. The layout intentionally shifts between narrow, shaded promenades and sunlit pocket nooks, creating a dynamic rhythm that encourages retail exploration, pop-up discovery, and spontaneous social encounters at every turn.

The Square | 场

The Civic & Festive Stage

Positioned as the central gathering ground, the Square serves as the project's public heartbeat—a flexible, multi-functional canvas for dynamic urban expression. Equipped with flush, adaptable paving, interactive water features, and integrated event space, the space seamlessly transitions from daily public lounge to a high-energy venue for traditional festival celebrations, art installations, and youth culture pop-ups. It is where Guangzhou's rich festive legacy meets modern city life.

Cultivating People and Community

The landscape design drives a dynamic catalyst for user engagement. By tailoring micro-environments to support curated trendy retail, and high-visibility social spaces, the design attracts an intergenerational, tech-savvy, lifestyle-focused demographic of Guangzhou. The renovation of Taikoo Hui Huifang redefines commercial landscape design by honoring spatial history while embracing international modernity. By converting the spatial principles of the traditional fang into dynamic, modern urban places, the design celebrates Guangzhou’s unique culture of slow living within a high-energy urban framework. Culture, place, and people unite here to form a benchmark for modern urban regeneration.
