The Nature Of Motion by RUFproject

Overview

For the occasion of Milano Design Week 2016, 10 progressive contemporary designers join Nike to explore Natural Motion though various mediums. Some works are conceptual — foreshadowing future technologies — and others practical. In many cases, materials unique to Nike, such as Flyknit, have been applied.

Set within a disused light bulb factory in Milan, the horseshoe arrangement of buildings gives the temporary exhibition a closed walled area creating a secret garden full of natural personality and magic. The exhibition space is designed using 16,000 nike shoeboxes, stacked and arranged to create a continuous flow of distinct spaces for each collaborating artist to showcase their work. The shoebox becomes the metaphor of possibility, celebrating an endless pursuit of motion through the space. Installations are spread through the exhibit from Bertjan Pot, Martino Gamper, Clara Von Zweigberk & Shane Schneck, Max Lamb, Lindsey Adelman, Greg Lynn, Marco Zavagno & Enrica Cavarzan and Sebastian Wrong.

Following the collaborative artist spaces are a series of spaces showcasing the past present and future of Nike Innovation. Individual computer milled birch plywood podiums hold a genealogy of Nike innovation with a video installation by UVA, Analog and Chlose Hayward set as the backdrop. Nike Free is showcased through an installation of tumbling grass dodecahedrons and lit by single cord lightbulbs. The final spaces focus on future innovation concepts by Nike's internal design team showcasing a series of experiments in form, material and technique.
