LOCALY store

Overview
LOCALY is a 120 m² retail space by DA BUREAU, completed in 2024 in a historic building. Conceived for a store of home goods from authentic Russian brands, the project transforms a diverse product assortment into a coherent spatial identity. The design draws on the aesthetics of a Soviet lost-and-found office: cataloguing, order, memory and familiarity become tools for retail display rather than nostalgia alone.
The key challenge was to create a commercially effective environment without intervening in the protected shell of the existing building. Instead of altering walls, da bureau developed a ‘box within a box’ system of freestanding shelving installed along the perimeter. This furniture-led strategy formed a new retail architecture inside the historic envelope, accelerated delivery to three months and gave the brand a clear, recognizable framework.
Innovation lies in translating archival typologies into contemporary shopping behaviour. Rhythmic shelving accommodates objects of different scales; a triangular entrance composition combines a curated central rack, a rest area with armchairs and a checkout zone split into two islands - one for purchases and one for product customization. This layout supports browsing, pause and interaction, turning the act of shopping into a more personal experience.
Form is defined by a warm, layered palette, recycled plastic panels and lacquered furniture inspired by the 1970s. The result balances tactility, memory and clarity. Functionally, the store is organized into two atmospheres: a densely merchandised first hall for multi-item discovery and a calmer second room dedicated to Morpheus textiles, marked by a discreet lightbox that draws visitors deeper inside. Windowsill seating and moments of rest reduce visual fatigue despite the richness of the assortment.
Beyond aesthetics, the project has an eco-social dimension. It promotes authentic local brands, reuses the existing architectural shell instead of rebuilding it, and incorporates recycled materials. LOCALY shows how retail design can build identity, extend dwell time and create a culturally specific experience through architecture rather than decoration.
