Hotel Avándaro

Chain + Siman

Short description

The Hotel Avándaro, initially opened in 1958, has undergone an extensive remodeling and expansion to cater to the increasing demands of convention groups while enhancing the overall guest experience. The original design by Artigas Arquitectos, followed a renovation by Arnold "Noldi" Schreck in the early 90´s. However the hotel demanded a new intervention to comply with the needs of the surrounding towns of Avándaro and Valle de Bravo as a growing destination for weekends´ retreats, this renovation carefully balances the hotel’s rich historical elements with modern design enhancements, maintaining iconic features such as sloping roofs and wooden beams to preserve its traditional charm.

Sustainability was central to the project, with a focus on refurbishing rather than rebuilding, significantly reducing waste and environmental impact. The design included energy-efficient systems, such as advanced lighting and HVAC that adapt to real-time occupancy and conditions, reducing energy consumption. Moreover, solar panels were installed to supplement the hotel's energy needs with renewable sources, further lowering its carbon footprint. The interconnected solar system designed and installed for the client has a projected solar generation of 321,581 kWh for the first year, which represents approximately 42.6% of the expected annual consumption (754,096 kWh) after the expansion and renovation.

Water conservation was also prioritized. The hotel implemented rainwater collection and reuse systems, minimizing reliance on municipal water supplies and promoting sustainable water management. This approach not only conserves resources but also serves as an exemplary model for environmental stewardship in the hospitality industry.

The renovation involved using locally sourced materials to ensure that new constructions integrated seamlessly with both the natural and urban landscapes of Avándaro, supporting local industries and reducing transportation emissions. This strategic use of materials helped maintain the area’s aesthetic integrity while promoting local economic growth.

Avándaro and Valle de Bravo´s economy depends on weekends´ visitors which create a fluctuating income for local population which add up to 30,000. The hotel´s expansion and remodeling offered a boost to its inmediate context by creating new jobs during the span of this important transformative efforts. The result was the creation of 2000 direct jobs and 4000 indirect jobs.

The project created distinct zones for convention activities and regular guest use, improving functionality and ensuring that all visitors enjoy a tailored and high-quality environment. Convention spaces were outfitted with sophisticated amenities to support business needs, while leisure areas were designed to offer tranquility and relaxation, enhancing the overall guest experience.

This extensive remodeling not only revitalized a historic establishment but also set a benchmark for future developments in sustainable and innovative hotel design. The Hotel Avándaro now stands as a model of how thoughtful historic architectural integration can enhance guest experiences, promote environmental responsibility, and contribute positively to the community. By blending heritage preservation with modern functionality, the hotel continues to attract a diverse array of guests, boosting local tourism, creating new jobs and preserving the cultural heritage of Avándaro.
