Sunset Flat

An Asia-based couple wanted their 1,250 sf Vancouver pied-à-terre with big English Bay views to be artistically designed and feel both comfortable and inspiring.

Thoroughly rethinking the floorplan within the confines of the 1990’s tower started with maximizing views. From the entry we created a view corridor through the kitchen to the Mangiarotti table and Bocci 73 pendant installation. Between the living room and bedroom, a sliding wall optimizes views from the bed, providing a loft-like feel when the clients are home alone and privacy when hosting friends. From the tub, the summer sun can be watched setting over the mountains with linen shades providing privacy from the neighbouring tower.

Throughout we sought the balance of a whimsical yet poised atmosphere—the visual weight of dramatically veined stone mixes with sculptural elements like swagged lighting cables installed with custom ghost-mounting, the Agape tub and Ingo Mauer’s Johnny B Butterfly pendant.

Powder grey millwork and walls are the backdrop for an eclectic mix of colour, furniture and artwork. In the living room, a Jan Kath spectrum rug brings the sunset hues inside paired with the oversized leather swivel chair and blue mohair sofa, both from Moroso. In the ensuite, an Avocatus Granite sink pairs with playful Bocci 87 lighting and gold Vola faucet. White Venetian plaster above the fireplace reflects the sky outside.
