House For Parents by Matsuyama Architect and Associates

Overview

This project locates Amami Oshima Island, Kagoshima. It is covered by a large roof to create internal space as if it is under the tree. Besides, interior space is open infinitely towards the outside, it is important in the region that its structure manage to withstand typhoons and sever subtropical climate. The steel columns support light weight wooden roof which prevent thermal bridge. The plan follows 4m grid steel columns, while concrete walls are standing independent from steel columns so that room sizes are determined without structural restriction. As inheriting ‘separated-block residence’ which is traditional architectural style in Amami archipelago, each function look independent. At the same time, common spaces extend toward extensive environment with the protruded concrete wall.
